My self-portraits series was created from a culmination of three different things, Covid, need to create for me, and my love for fashion and clothes.
Because of Covid, which is too often a normal phrase these day, caused many lockdowns. These lockdowns allowed me to do many things, apply for grant to recoup income lost, write but also the opportunity to just create for myself, which is so needed as a creative entrepreneur.
Secondly, the need to create for myself. I recently saw a tweet by a fellow creative & poet Joeseph Solomon which read
"i cannot stress enough the importance of creating art that has zero expectation of being publicly consumed."
As a creative I resonate so much with that, which is why creating for myself and not for others is not only so important but is often a creative relief and release for me.
Lastly, my love for fashion and clothes. So with the opportunity afforded by lockdowns and the need to create for myself in comes in my love for fashion and clothes. At the start of the lock down I would set up a simple grey backdrop, make sure I get dressed (help with getting into a working mode) and snap a few shots of me and what I was wearing. Creating these self-portraits allowed me to do and showcase a few different things. It allow me to playing with studio lighting (thank you grants) and just experiment with it. It allowed me to showcase my many facial expressions, personalities and love of just having fun regardless.
